Ridgeback Bar Table Rails

Professional Edition Ridgeback rails have a thicker cushion block that is made from specially designed bonded clear poplar. This has the effect of deepening the slate shelf so that the pocket responds more like a professional table. The pocket's opening angles  and the length of each rail has been changed so that the pocket openings are similar to those of a professional table. The pocket openings for the Professional Edition Ridgebackrails are as follows:
Corner pockets: 4 1/2" jaw and 4" throat
Side Pockets: 4 3/4" jaw and 4" throat

STAPLES VS. GLUE

In olden days pool table felt was affixed to the table with tacks which eventually gave way to staples. Some cloth fitters in European countries still use tacks when installing cloth on snooker tables. Tacks and staples have given way to glue - more specifically contact adhesive. The advantages of glue are getting complete adhesion of the cloth to the slate edge and you don't bomb out the wood slate liner with tack/staple holes since the cloth adheres to the slate, not the liner. The glue used by professionals is 3M-10 Scotchweld. It's not cheap but works great and actually permits relatively easy removal of cloth from the slate when it's time to recover your table. If you decide to try it make sure to read the instructions and allow the glue to dry before adhering the cloth to the slate.

Helpful Info on Recovering Your Pool Table

There are 2 types of pocket pool tables which are the bar style (coin-op) 1-piece slate pool table and the standard home or commercial style 3-piece slate pool table. On bar style tables many owners have trouble recovering the rails with new pool table felt cloth since the rails are different then those found on a standard or commercial style table.

We made a short video on recovering bar style pool table rails which should help. Regardless of the type of pool table it's important to note that the new pool table felt should be pulled tight but not overstretched on the rails. Overstretching will usually result in dimples in the rubber cushion.

When it comes to installing pool table felt on the slate we particularly like the Diamond pool table recovering video part 1 and part 2. This method is useful whether you have a 1-piece or 3-piece slate pool table. The glue used in this video is 3M-10 Scotchweld which is available here. Although some tables can be stapled we've found that glue gives much better results.

A word on Stretch Index. When installing pool table felt on the slate always adhere the felt to the slate on 1 long side of the table first. Then go to the other side, stretch the cloth to the max between the side and either end pocket and make a small mark on the felt cloth at the top edge of the slate. Let go of the felt and take a measurement from the opposite edge of the slate back to your mark. Add a 1/2" to this measurement and this figure is your stretch index. Now mark the cloth in several places along the long side of the uninstalled cloth. Use a straightedge to draw a line across your marks. Now when you start installing this side of the felt cloth you stretch the cloth so your line is pulled to this edge of the slate. This assures that your felt cloth is stretched evenly from side to side.

Prices Go Up Again

Wool prices increased again resulting in higher retail prices for major brand pool table felt and cloth. Be wary if you find lowball prices for brands like Simonis and Championship - you may receive an imitation rather then a genuine product!

Hot billiard cloth color for 2011

The hot cloth color this year is Simonis 860 in Tournament Blue. This color was scientifically developed to better focus on the balls and is now the color of choice in many professional billiards events.

Just what is worn billiard cloth?

There is a difference between "worn" and "looks bad".

If you have a worsted cloth on your table you will get the inevitable white marks. This is not wear but burn marks from friction between the cloth and the cue ball leaving residue from the ball on the cloth. Worsted cloth is extremely smooth with no nap. Better quality ball sets with a superior finish will reduce the severity of these burn marks. They look pretty bad but it's not "wear" of the cloth.

On more common "napped" cloth the burn marks will be barely noticeable due to the coarseness or "nap" of the cloth however this type of cloth will develop grooves and valleys in the nap which affects ball roll accuracy.

Once you've been playing on your cloth for some time you will become accustomed to how it plays. When it starts deviating from the ball rolls you expect then that's a sign that the cloth is starting to "wear" out and due for replacement.

When it's time for cloth replacement we feel the best cloth in terms of accuracy, speed and durability is Simonis 860

Why Billiard Cloth Prices Increase

There were no billiard cloth price increases during 2010 but that will change in 2011 due to higher prices for raw wool. Good quality billiard cloth is comprised of at least 75% wool sourced primarily from Australia and New Zealand. Wool prices have risen roughly 30% in the past year so expect this increase to be passed on to the consumer very soon.
